Professional Interests

Marriage and Couples Counselling

Since starting my career, I have been focusing my clinical and research interests on understanding what makes marriages work and how to help couples create strong and satisfying relationships. My passion is to help couples, where possible, to prepare for, enhance, or re-vitalize their marriage.

I see the process of change in marriage counselling as a process of expansion—that is, expansion of conscious choices and positive actions, of vision or perceptions, of heart-felt feelings of caring and respect, of communication, and of foundational qualities such as love, commitment, positive intentions, and accountability. This expansion ultimately helps couples create strong emotional connections through greater unity, mutual support, time together, trust, and closeness in the relationship.

I view my role as a guide or a coach in helping couples learn how to see and meet each other's important emotional needs, develop mutual respect and friendship, manage the inevitable differences that arise between two people, and renew feelings of heart-felt love and connection.

Conflict Resolution

I have found that much of what I've learned about conflict resolution in family relationships can be applied to resolving difficult situations arising between individuals in the workplace. Conflict, in some form or another, is an inevitable part of interpersonal relationships. Sometimes conflict becomes unproductive or destructive as each side focuses on their own positions, becoming polarized.

One solution is to use the aid of a neutral mediator who can guide the respective parties into a process for resolving disputes. This process involves helping each party move beyond stating positions toward an understanding of each other's interests and to co-operate in finding solutions that meet the needs of both parties.

Substance Abuse Assessment and Treatment

Substance abuse is a growing concern that affects the lives of many individuals and families. Recent studies find that 10% of Canadians struggle with an alcohol abuse problem. A significant number of clients who come to see me for help primarily with relationship concerns or other difficulties also struggle with substance abuse issues or addictions. This makes it important to stay well-informed and knowledgeable about how to help clients cope with and overcome such complex issues.

Seminars and Training

In addition to counselling services, I offer seminars and training for organizations and corporations on personal effectiveness topics such as stress management, assertiveness, communication, dealing with difficult situations, and conflict resolution. The process of teaching and training is one of the most enjoyable and enriching aspects of my professional career. To organize a workshop for your organization please feel free to contact me directly using the contact information below.
